Lasers provide a precise and bloodless method of operating on the delicate structures of the ear. The CO2 (carbon dioxide), Argon and KTP lasers are the princpal types of lasers used in ear surgery. Lasers can stop bleeding (coagulation) because of their selective absorbtion in the red spectrum. It can also vaporize tissue.
Lasers are especially useful in stapedectomies (see otosclerosis) and in removing inflamed tissue (see cholesteatoma).
